LED Light Therapy

LED light therapy, or light-emitting diode therapy, is a non-invasive skin treatment that uses lights of various wavelengths to stimulate cellular processes in the skin, leading to rejuvenation and repair. It can be used to address a number of skin conditions and boost overall radiance. While the treatment can be performed on its own, it’s more frequently used in conjunction with other treatments such as dermal needling, or as one component of a facial.

How does it work?

The nonthermal, low-level light penetrates skin without creating any trauma. The technology was first developed by NASA to grow plants in space, before the agency turned it on astronauts and found LED light therapy also promoted human tissue growth and wound-healing activity.

LED light treatments most commonly harness red light (often paired with invisible near-infrared light) or blue light. Each wavelength penetrates skin at a different depth, and treatments can use more than one colour.

Each different wavelength of light benefits the skin in its own way:

  • Red light’s collagen-building effects make it useful in anti-aging treatments. It can help minimise the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles while mildly tightening skin. Thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties, it’s also suitable for soothing the irritation of rosacea, psoriasis, and eczema.
  • Blue light is a proven-effective acne treatment that reduces breakout-causing bacteria and soothes inflammation.
  • Green light reduces inflammation and induces collagen production.

FAQ

What Is LED Light Therapy?

LED light therapy is a non-invasive skin treatment that uses different wavelengths of light to address various skin concerns. The treatment involves exposing the skin to light-emitting diodes (LEDs), which penetrate the skin at different depths to stimulate cellular repair and rejuvenation.

What Does LED Light Therapy Do?

LED light therapy offers a range of benefits depending on the light colour used:

Red Light: Boosts collagen production, reduces inflammation, and promotes healing, making it ideal for anti-ageing and skin repair.
Blue Light: Targets acne-causing bacteria to clear breakouts and prevent future ones.
Green Light: Reduces inflammation and induces collagen production.

What to Do After LED Light Therapy?

After an LED light therapy session:

  • Apply sunscreen to protect your skin, as it may be more sensitive to UV exposure.
  • Avoid harsh skincare products like exfoliants for at least 24 hours.
  • Keep your skin hydrated with a gentle moisturiser.
  • Your practitioner will provide tailored aftercare advice to ensure the best results.
How Often Should You Use LED Light Therapy?

The frequency of LED light therapy depends on your skin goals. For general maintenance or mild concerns, one session per week may be adequate. For targeted treatments, such as acne or anti-ageing, you may benefit from 2-3 sessions per week initially, followed by monthly maintenance sessions. Consultation with your skin care professional will help you determine the best schedule for you.
